"That day I met Alexis, I’d never had any illusions I would ever amount to much."
And so begins a love story set along the shores of East Bay near Pensacola, Florida. Alexis, sixteen and already stunning, daughter of a shrimper, poor, but with goals of becoming something more. Wade, a year younger, smitten by this older girl, joins Alexis to form a crabbing business. He has no idea how tragic that decision will be. Then comes pudgy Carla, who sits with them at the school lunch table. Carla is smart, daughter of a prominent lawyer, and she seems taken with Wade. When she invites them both to a party her brother is throwing at her parents’ house, that innocent action precipitates events that change all of their lives.
Together these three teens are destined for greatness, but at terrible cost. While Wade enjoys the company of two girls and comes of age with both of them, murder, rape, and unspeakable violence intrude. Wade is changed after his vengeance on two killers, but is unable to escape further violence. Nor is he able to understand Alexis’ treatment of him. Nevertheless, he forges on, pulling the two girls along with him to a success none of them ever expected. Can the three hold on to it? Overcome their past? Finally enjoy the fruits of their labor? That’s the unknowable future that unfolds with twists and turns that none of them could have foreseen.
If you don’t mind having to reflect a few moments at the end of a story to figure out what just happened, this tale might be for you. Just be warned, this is no formulaic, run of the mill, love story. And it doesn’t take long for that to become clear.

I believe this is the 2nd of Mr. Merritt’s books I read. The first was “A Gift of Time”, and that was certainly enjoyable enough to make me want to experience all of his stories. I purchased his entire library after finishing “A Gift of Time”. I very much like that each of his books is a standalone story.I’m struggling, though. I can’t decide if this one was my favorite, or if “A Gift of Diamonds” was. Maybe I’m leaning a little harder towards “A Gift of Diamonds” …
I am a product of the 50’s and 60’s – that was my youth – and Mr. Merritt nailed the feeling of the period. It was well done enough that I was reminiscing of my own youth as I read this one. I also lived in the Tampa area through the mid-70’s and early 80’s. The rural areas of West central and Central Florida were very much as described in this story. I probably made it up to Pensacola once or twice, but Florida was Florida in those days. The scenes described brought back some very fond memories for me. Yes, there were some very nasty people back then, but rural folks by and large back then took care of things as needed. Some younger folks today might misconstrue what I just said, but I’ll just say that crime back then was not what it is today.
His characters, especially the kids, were superbly created, as was their dialog. Far too often authors writing children or teenage characters lapse into adult thought patterns and speech. It could have happened some here, but it was truly a minimal impact. Great job there!
I found the writing exceptional. Some very minor editing errors through the book, but nothing that impaired my reading.
If I have a gripe at all, it’s the same gripe I have with any 1st person point of view. I don’t like a 1st person narrative for a host of reasons. 1) I don’t want to be the main character. 2) The main character thinks, speaks and behaves in ways I would not. 3) It doesn’t matter who the author is – I always find the 1st person MC lacks the depth of every other character. That happens in this book, as well. There were certainly times when I could not relate to, or understand the MC. Behavior, emotion, responses or action, which should have been logically present, were absent. It was enough to throw me off kilter during the reading and, for me, detracted from what is a superb read.
I did find myself wishing for more information on what was happening in the background, or with several characters. I was a bit disappointed that once the story moved past a character’s necessary involvement that they completely disappeared. Such as Alexis’ parents … a sentence or two explaining what became of supporting characters would have been greatly appreciated. I finished this book wondering what became of many of the people impacting the life of these kids. Or, how the kids managed to make things work to their benefit – such as the purchase of the steel hulled boat. Who crewed the thing? How? When? Who monitored the business while they were all off to college? There were too many of these gaps in the narrative which could have been easily corrected by a few sentences, yet weren’t …
I concur with some other reviewers – Mr. Merritt tends to end his books rather abruptly. In the case of this book I was left fairly annoyed with the MC’s attitude. Again, 1st person – not how I would have thought, felt or behaved – but he was just too … detached. That last sentence in the book? I truly needed another sentence or two to complete the story for me.
Overall, this book was a wonderful experience for me. It took me right out of my daily world and put me in a happy place. THAT is the mark of a truly wonderful story experience.

A Season of Tides edition by Jerry Merritt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved this book. A really unexpected read. So we'll written it leaves you wanting more from this writer. The cover picture doesnt do it justice. Had read another story from this writer so decided to try this book too and I'm really glad I did.
Jerry Merritt has become my favorite author! I have read hundreds of books but very few more than once. I have read A season of Tides and A gift of Diamonds four times each and can't stop going back. Merritt can write about kids adventures in the 1940's and '50's like I remember them only better. If my old favorites rated five stars this should get ten.
you want intelligent, beautiful, thoughtful writing with perfectly developed characters and story lines then Jerry Merritt stories are for you.
This has been my fourth one. All have been five stars. All have had completely different themes. I have a couple more to go. They're the best I've found on ... simple as that.
This is the 4th book I have read by Jerry Merritt and as usual it has left me with mixed feelings. For some reason I find myself drawn to his stories even though most are quite different from the type of book I would normally enjoy. I plan to continue to read his books until I come on one I don't like.
I cannot express how much I enjoy Gerry writing it's personal it's insightful it reflects the youth to some extent I went through and the confusion that I experienced. I have read a number of his books and enjoy The Living Daylights out of them and will read anything he writes at this point. I cannot recommend this book more highlight it was a great read wonderful caracal development wonderful plot truly a joy.
Surprising book ... I usually opt for "action & adventure", and this book certainly had some great action content ... but the author weaved the action between a multi-sided love story ... a "coming of age" tale that combined memories of my own youth in the 50's and a inspiring formula for starting a business from scratch and making it a success. Had some tough spots and some war action as well ... all in all ... a good read.
This guy is an author in every sense of the title. He knows the sea (apologies to Robert Louis Stevenson) and the combat scene was as well written as any I've read. Tim O'Brien would be impressed. I did nearly two combat tours with the 3rd Marines in that ill conceived exercise and there was a certain understanding in the way this writer detailed the encounter with the enemy that doesn't usually come off nearly as well done by posers.
